Stourhead | Palladian house and world-famous landscape garden | National Trust

National Trust properties make for perfect days out. Whether you love gardens, social history, castles or simply ambling through unspoilt countryside, the National Trust have you covered. We have visited some really beautiful National Trust properties in England (Packwood House, Charlecote Park, Waddesdon Manor ) and have loved them all. We recently visited Stourhead which is located in Wiltshire and is famous for its fabulous landscaped gardens. There is also the family home, a Palladian villa, the main floor of which is open for visitors and offers insight into the life of the Hoare family.

The main draw at Stourhead, however, is the beautifully landscaped garden. With a large lake, hills in the background, classic architecture and a range of trees and shrubs, Stourhead was like a living piece of art. When we visited, the place was awash with Autumn colours and it was simply breathtaking.

The map given at the ticket counter was very useful. It helped us explore the grounds, visiting all the temples and interesting features (a mini version of Rome's Pantheon, a magical grotto, a medieval cross, a temple dedicated to the Roman goddess of flowers and much more) along the way. The lake remained the focal point, dominating the landscape. We visited in the last week of October and most of the trees were in full autumn colours which added to the beauty. Although the gardens would have their own unique beauty in every season, I feel Autumn is the best time to visit Stourhead.

  1. If I am not mistaken, Pride and Prejudice (Matthew MacFadyen and Keira Knightley) was filmed here.

    1. Yes, you are right. The Temple of Apollo and the Palladian Bridge feature in the movie.
