Packwood House, Lapworth | National Trust

Every year, Heritage Open Days offer the general public an opportunity to visit interesting properties that are not normally open to visitors or usually charge for admission. Heritage Open Days are held annually in September and this year it was held on the 7-10th September. We were in Warwickshire during that period and went round to Packwood House (a National Trust property in Lapworth) which happened to be participating in Heritage Open Days and was free to explore on the day we visited.

Packwood House is a beautiful, timber-framed Tudor house that has some really nice furniture and tapestries. In addition to the wonderful tapestries, there are other things of interest like lovely panels of stained glass windows, an artist's lay figure which sits in a sedan chair, Bargello needlework and other objects of great beauty.

Packwood House is also popular for its yew gardens and we loved exploring this part of the property. Also equally interesting and lovely was the Memorial Orchard (with pear, apple, plum, cherry and many other fruiting trees), the Raised Terrace (what a splash of colour it was!) and the Kitchen Garden (neatly planted rows of vegetables and fruits). After spending some time in the house (timed entry tickets to the house available in the reception) we wandered around the grounds, enjoying all the gardens.

Just like some of the other National Trust properties (Waddesdon Manor, Charlecote Park, Overbeck's) we have visited in the recent times, this one also lived up to our expectations. Very welcoming staff, excellent guides in the house, and beautifully maintained house and gardens. For us, the gardens were the highlight. They were simply beautiful to walk around. It was well worth the visit and we had a great time. If we are in the vicinity, we will definitely visit again.

    1. We visited the property as day out trip. I do not think Packwood House has accommodation facilities for visitors/guests. If you are in Warwickshire, you could plan a day trip to this NT property.
