Romania

Romania is a lovely country to explore. It feels warm and welcoming, with a mix of mountains, forests, old villages and lively cities. You get a bit of everything here. Beautiful drives. Medieval towns. Wildlife. Great food. Peaceful monasteries. It suits slow travel and short breaks alike.

Monastery in Bucharest

The main cities in Romania are Bucharest, Brașov, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu and Timișoara. Bucharest is the buzzing capital with big parks and grand buildings. Brașov sits in the heart of Transylvania and is one of the most popular bases for exploring the region. Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca are known for culture and student life. Timișoara has colourful squares and a chilled vibe. The country is famous for the Carpathian Mountains, medieval castles, scenic roads like the Transfăgărășan, traditional crafts and its rich wildlife. Tourism here is still growing, so many places feel calm and untouched.

If you are planning your trip, you can start with a simple overview of the top attractions and things to do in Romania. This guide gives you a good feel for the country and helps you decide where to go if it is your first visit.

Brașov was one of the places we enjoyed exploring. The town has a cosy feel, pretty streets and easy access to nature. My post on the top things to see and do in Brașov covers the best bits and makes it easy to plan a day or two here.

Brasov

If you love a good road trip, the Transfăgărășan is a must. It is one of the best drives I have ever done. The hairpin bends, cliffs and lakes make it a real stand-out experience for me. It was, without doubt, one of my personal favourites in Romania.

Romania also surprises you with the variety of things you can bring home. From pottery to honey and wooden crafts, the souvenirs guide walks you through the top picks.

Many people visit for the history too. The Curtea de Argeș Monastery is one of the most beautiful religious sites in the country. The details on the church are stunning, and the place has such a peaceful feel.

Another highlight for me was going to see Romania's brown bears. It is a rare experience. Being in the hide, waiting quietly and spotting these huge animals in the wild is something I will always remember.

If you want to stay somewhere homely, Casa Suzy & Roxy Homestay in Arpașu de Jos is a great choice. It is simple, warm and close to the Transfăgărășan, which makes it handy for exploring this part of Transylvania.

History lovers will also enjoy the Cistercian Abbey of Cârța. It is a quiet and atmospheric ruin tucked between mountains and fields. It is a nice stop if you want to see a different side of the region.

Of course, a visit to the capital is always a good idea. My guide on what to see and do in Bucharest covers the key sights, local areas and easy day trips. There is plenty here to fill a short break.

If you are flying in or out and want a smooth stay, the Vienna House Easy by Wyndham Bucharest Airport is a handy hotel near the airport. I have a full review if you want to know what the rooms, food and service are like.
