Résidence de L’Evêché Pondicherry Review: Heritage Villa Stay

I travelled to Pondicherry with my brother and my parents to celebrate their milestone wedding anniversary. We wanted somewhere a little different for the stay, rather than a typical hotel. It was important to us that my parents had plenty of space, more privacy and the freedom to move around at their own pace.

After looking at several properties, we chose Résidence de L’Evêché. As it was a private villa, there were no crowds and we had the whole place to ourselves. There was also an on-site chef and a caretaker team to look after us during the stay. Our five days here were fantastic, and the experience was even better than we had expected.

Location and first impressions

Résidence de L’Evêché is in the French Quarter in the centre of Puducherry. The location was ideal for exploring the city, with many attractions within easy reach. 

Promenade Beach was around a 12-minute walk away, while Sri Aurobindo Ashram was less than a kilometre from the villa. Pondicherry Museum, Joan of Arc Park, the Botanical Garden and several other places were also nearby. The Art and Craft Village in Murungapakkam was around 20 mins away by car. Puducherry Airport was around 5 km away. 

The villa's central location made it easy for us to visit many of the best things to see in Pondicherry.

The spacious villa has three bedrooms and three bathrooms. The heritage building dates back to the 1790s and sits on Rue de l’Evêché, a street named after the Archbishop’s house that once stood there. The villa has had several owners over the years, including the Goubert family, after whom Goubert Market is named. 

We had let the guest services team know what time we would be arriving, so everything was ready for us. Check-in was quick and we received a warm welcome. The team explained the facilities and services offered and then took us upstairs to see the three bedrooms on the first floor.

Our rooms and the shared spaces

The villa had three bedrooms on the first floor. Two had double beds, while the third had two single beds. We used all three rooms, and each one was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The wooden beds and furniture were solid and beautifully made, while the simple decor suited the style of the house. It really did feel like staying in an old colonial villa. Fresh fruit was also placed in each room on the day we arrived. All the bedrooms had air conditioning, which we used often as the weather was still quite warm before the monsoon.

Each bedroom had its own private bathroom with a shower. Towels, bathrobes, slippers, toilet paper, a hairdryer and toiletries were all provided. Two of the bedrooms opened onto a long shared balcony at the front of the villa. 

The third room did not have a balcony, but a short flight of stairs outside led to an open courtyard terrace with seating. We spent a few evenings there, and it was a lovely place to sit and unwind.

The living room, dining area and kitchen were on the ground floor. The living room was bright and spacious, with high arched ceilings, sofas, a desk and a large choice of books. The dining room was just as lovely and was set up for breakfast every morning. 

The whole villa was very well maintained, with artwork and small details that added to its character. Having all this space to ourselves was wonderful and gave our family a good mix of comfort, privacy and time together.

 

Breakfast, Dining and Service

We had told the guest services team in advance that we only ate vegetarian food, and they took very good care of this throughout our stay. Breakfast was freshly prepared every morning and there was always a good variety. We were served fresh fruit, freshly squeezed fruit juices, croissants, pastries and other baked items from Palais de Mahé, their sister property just a short walk away. 

Tea and coffee were also available each morning. The team asked us the night before what we would like for breakfast the next day. Based on our choice, they prepared dishes such as dosas, parathas, upma and paniyaram, along with other Indian breakfast items. There was also a sweet dish at the end of breakfast each day. In the evenings, we were usually offered tea with a selection of biscuits.

We also had dinner at the villa on a couple of evenings when we returned early from sightseeing. We asked for simple food such as roti, vegetable curry, rice, dal and curd rice, and everything was fresh and tasty. The staff remembered our preferences and made sure we had everything we needed. The young chef also checked with us each day to see if we had enjoyed the food and what we would like to try next. My parents enjoyed the meals just as much as we did, and dining at the villa became a lovely part of our stay.

The staff also planned a lovely surprise for my parents on their anniversary. They decorated their bed with flowers and leaves and brought them a small anniversary cake. It was a thoughtful gesture that we had not expected, and it made the day feel even more special. 

What it was like staying here as a family

We stayed here with my parents, who are both in their late seventies, and the villa worked well for us as a family. There were three or four steps at the main entrance, so the property was not completely step-free. However, once inside, the small two-person lift made it easy for my parents to reach the bedrooms on the first floor. The cylindrical lift was quite unusual and looked a little like something from a sci-fi film. There was also a spiral staircase, which the rest of us enjoyed using.

The whole first floor was our private space, with all three bedrooms and the outdoor seating areas. The living room, dining area and kitchen were on the ground floor. A supervisor, chef and other members of the support team were on site, so help was always available when needed. At the same time, the team respected our privacy and gave us plenty of space.

We loved having the entire villa to ourselves. There was enough room for everyone to relax separately, while the shared areas allowed us to spend time together. It would work very well for families and groups of friends. It could also suit couples looking for a quiet and private stay, although the villa may offer more space than a couple would need.

What We Loved and Our Final Verdict

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Résidence de L’Evêché, and it exceeded our expectations. Having the whole villa to ourselves gave us plenty of space and privacy. At the same time, the chef and two support staff (including Suresh, the Manager) were always available when we needed them. They took care of our meals, helped with local information and made sure everything ran smoothly throughout our stay.

The villa was also good value for the price we paid. Its central location meant that many of Pondicherry’s main sights were close by, which made sightseeing much easier. The only small issue was parking, as there is no private parking at the property. Most of the time, our driver found a space on the street. When the road was busy, he had to park at the end of the road, but it was only a short walk away and was not a major problem.

Overall, we would happily stay here again. We would recommend Résidence de L’Evêché to anyone looking for a central stay with plenty of space, good food and excellent service.
