Arts & Crafts Village Pondicherry: A Visitor's Guide

While planning our time in Puducherry (Pondicherry), we wanted to explore attractions beyond the French Quarter and Promenade Beach. During our research, we came across the Arts and Crafts Village, a cultural space dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Indian arts and handicrafts.

Located on the outskirts of the city, the Arts and Crafts Village brings together artisans, workshops, galleries and exhibition spaces in one location. Visitors can browse handmade creations, watch craftspeople at work and learn more about traditional art forms that have been passed down through generations.

We spent around one to one and a half hours exploring the village and found it to be one of the more interesting cultural attractions in Pondicherry. If you are looking for something a little different from the city's better-known sights, it is well worth considering.

What is the Arts and Crafts Village?

The Arts and Crafts Village was created as a hub for traditional artisans and craftspeople. Rather than functioning as a museum, it provides working spaces where artists can create, display and sell their work directly to visitors.

The village celebrates a wide range of traditional crafts and artistic styles. As you move through the complex, you will find workshops, galleries and exhibition areas showcasing everything from stone carvings and terracotta sculptures to paintings, decorative ornaments and handmade gift items.

The attraction offers visitors a chance to experience an important part of India's artistic heritage while supporting local artisans who continue to practise these traditional skills.

Where is the Arts and Crafts Village?

The Arts and Crafts Village is located in the Murungapakkam area of Puducherry.

We had a car at our disposal during our trip, which made getting there straightforward. However, visitors without their own transport can easily reach the village by auto-rickshaw, taxi or rental vehicle.

The location sits outside the main tourist areas, making it a good addition to a day spent exploring some of Pondicherry's lesser-known attractions.

If you are planning a longer stay in the city, you may wish to include it as part of a broader sightseeing route. You can see how we organised our visit in our Pondicherry itinerary.

Entry Fee and Opening Hours

Entry to the Arts and Crafts Village is completely free.

This makes it an easy attraction to recommend, particularly for travellers looking to experience local culture without adding to their travel costs.

As opening hours can occasionally change, it is always worth checking the latest information before visiting.

What to See at the Arts and Crafts Village

The village consists of a series of workshops, galleries and exhibition spaces arranged around attractive grounds and covered walkways.

During our visit, we explored every workshop and display area, discovering a surprisingly diverse collection of traditional arts and crafts.

Artisan Workshops

The highlight of our visit was seeing artisans actively working in several of the workshops.

Rather than simply displaying finished products, many of the spaces allowed visitors to observe the creative process. Watching skilled craftspeople shape, carve and assemble their work added a level of authenticity that you simply do not get when browsing a souvenir shop.

Seeing these traditional skills in action gave us a much greater appreciation for the craftsmanship involved.

Traditional Crafts and Handicrafts

The Arts and Crafts Village showcases a wide variety of traditional crafts.

During our visit we saw:

  • Stone carvings and sculptures
  • Terracotta artwork
  • Clay figurines
  • Religious statues and idols
  • Tanjore paintings and framed artwork
  • Sea Shell crafts and hanging decorations
  • Handmade jewellery
  • Coconut art
  • Grass-based handicrafts
  • Decorative home accessories
  • Wooden decorative items
  • Jute handicrafts
  • Oil and pencil portraits

The variety ensures there is plenty to see, even if you are not planning to buy anything.

V. K. Munusamy's Workshop

One of the most interesting discoveries during our visit was seeing the workshop of V. K. Munusamy, also known as V. K. Munusamy Krishnapakthar.

Munusamy is an acclaimed Indian terracotta artist who was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020 for his contribution to the field of terracotta artistry.

Unfortunately, he was not present when we visited, but it was still interesting to see his workshop and learn about the work of one of India's most respected traditional artists.

Shopping for Handmade Souvenirs

Most of the items on display are available to purchase directly from the artisans.

We ended up buying a few small stone items as well as some handcrafted pieces made from natural grasses. It felt good knowing that our purchases were supporting local artisans while also giving us unique souvenirs to take home.

Architecture and Grounds

The village itself is pleasant to explore. The colourful buildings, murals, open courtyards and landscaped lawns create a relaxed atmosphere that encourages visitors to wander at their own pace.

Compared with some of Pondicherry's busier attractions, the Arts and Crafts Village felt peaceful and uncrowded during our visit.

Other Activities at the Arts and Crafts Village

The Arts and Crafts Village offers more than just artisan workshops.

Visitors can also enjoy boating experiences through the nearby waterways and mangrove areas. There are also walking trails and kayaking opportunities for those looking to spend more time outdoors.

We had already experienced mangrove boating elsewhere during our Pondicherry trip, so we chose to focus our time on exploring the workshops and exhibitions instead.

How Long Do You Need?

We spent around 1 to 1½ hours exploring the Arts and Crafts Village, which felt like the right amount of time to see all the workshops and displays at a comfortable pace.

Visitors who wish to take part in boating, kayaking or other outdoor activities may wish to allow additional time.

Is the Arts and Crafts Village Worth Visiting?

Yes, we think the Arts and Crafts Village deserves a place on most Pondicherry itineraries.

While attractions such as the French Quarter, Promenade Beach and Auroville tend to dominate travel guides, the Arts and Crafts Village offers something different. It provides visitors with an opportunity to connect with local culture, discover traditional craftsmanship and support artisans who continue to keep these skills alive.

For us, the chance to watch artisans at work was easily the highlight of the visit. Seeing the creative process first-hand transformed the experience from simple sightseeing into something much more memorable.

The fact that entry is free only strengthens the case for visiting.

The Arts and Crafts Village was one of the most enjoyable cultural attractions we visited in Pondicherry. The combination of working artisan workshops, traditional handicrafts, attractive surroundings and free entry makes it easy to recommend.

Whether you are interested in art, culture, photography, shopping or simply discovering a different side of Pondicherry, the Arts and Crafts Village is a rewarding place to spend a few hours.
