Bristol Street Art

One of my favourite activities on my travels is discovering street art. Street art seems to be gaining a lot of popularity as is evidenced by the street art/murals popping up across cities all over the world. Some cities are just discovering street art having considered them graffiti and vandalism for a long time, while some have cities have gained international attention for their street art. In Europe, London is popular for its street art as are Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Bergen, Sarajevo and Moscow among others. Poland has some really nice street art and murals in Warsaw and Gdansk. Kraków's street art scene is also developing. Closer home, Bristol has a very prominent street art scene. Banksy's works are popular but there are many large and colourful murals from other talented artists as well.

During our recent visit to Bristol, we set out to explore the street art scene in the city and as expected it did not disappoint. So many beautiful pieces of work, some in traditional style while some more modern in their approach, some raising awareness about social and political issues while some simply, pieces of beautiful art. I liked it all. My favourite was artist Jody Thomas' work on the wall of The Florist featured at the beginning of this article.

Below are some of the other pieces that we saw in Bristol.

Mother & Child - a beautiful piece by Los Angeles artist El Mac.

  1. Wow they all are beautiful! Bristol really has some great paintings on the walls and my favorite has to be aswell the one with the flowers. There should be more art like this on the grey walls of buildings! From now on, whenever I travel I will pay more attention tl street art!

    1. There are so many more, Chloe. The area around Nelson Street, Stokes Croft and North Street in Bedminster are some of the hotspots for street art.

  3. This is real street art. I've gone to a lot of streets around the world and get dismayed when they are just graffiti which, to me, isn't art. My favorite is the Hanging Man!

    1. The Hanging Man is one of Banksy's popular works in Bristol. The work was shot at with a blue paintball gun by someone else later.

  4. What beautiful pieces of art! I love the hanging man, it's done so beautifully. Also, a lot of this art is so colourful! I wish Dubai hadn't banned street art, it really adds character to a city.

    1. Yes, some of the pieces were simply beautiful. It's a shame that they have banned street art. Is the art work on 'Dubai Walls' still there or has it been got rid of?

  6. I am literally going to Bristol tomorrow and I can't wait to see all this amazing street art. I really like the Pangolin piece because it is artistic and also brings light to a serious animal trafficking issue! Thanks for the tour!

    1. Yes, the Pangolin piece is very beautifully done. It is a work of street artist Louis Masai. He created one other piece about the sea turtle which I did not get the chance to spot. I hope you have a lovely time in Bristol and enjoy the city's street art scene.

  8. I also love admiring street arts, and feel amazed about the passion these artists are giving. We have similar art initiative here in BGC, in collaboration of many business owners. Now it is fun to have a walk tour just to explore these huge murals.

  9. My God. That is wide variety of street art. Industrial to pop and abstract. Kudos to you to have captured it all. It does need a good eye to spot it all. The beat part of it is that it all seems as of it has been painted yesterday
