Sutton Hoo | Anglo-Saxon Royal Burial Site

Sutton Hoo, near Woodbridge (Suffolk), is the site of one of the most noteworthy archaeological discoveries of the country. It hosts burial mounds from the Anglo-Saxon era and also has an informative exhibition where visitors can learn more about the life of Anglo-Saxons. The site is managed by National Trust and is quite popular with visitors to the area.

While visiting Sutton Hoo, there are three main things you can see and do:

Visit the Royal Burial Mounds: The burial mounds at Sutton Hoo offer a fascinating insight into the world of Anglo-Saxons. There are many burial mounds within the site but the one at Mound One was the richest burial. The treasures found here are now displayed at The British Museum. Some reproductions can be seen in the exhibition hall, though. You can explore the mounds on your own or sign up for a guided tour.

Take a look at the exhibition: We were impressed with the exhibition. Although it was small, it was well presented and the volunteer guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. A short film on the Anglo-Saxon era, a wonderful recreation of King Raedwald's burial chamber, audio-visual displays and beautiful reproductions of the treasures discovered on the site - the exhibition has it all.

Spend some time at Tranmer House: Tranmer House was the home of Mrs Edith Pretty who instigated and paid for the archaeological dig thus being instrumental in the discovery of the burial mounds. The house overlooks the River Deben and offers views across the burial mounds. The guide at Tranmer House was lovely and explained everything very nicely. The house with its wood-panelled interiors (Burmese Teak Wood), marble fireplace and artefacts dating back to the 1930s transports you back in time. Everything was so real and beautifully presented that I felt Mrs Edith Pretty would walk into the house at any moment.

Overall, Sutton Hoo is a great place for people who love history. Actually, it is well worth a visit regardless of your interest in history and regardless of your age. A good exhibition, lovely walk amongst the ancient burial mounds, Tranmer House, welcoming and knowledgeable guides and staff - all of this makes Sutton Hoo a very interesting attraction.
