Practical Italy travel tips
Open any section for a quick planning tip.
When to visit
Spring and early autumn are good times for sightseeing and city breaks. The weather is often pleasant and visitor numbers may be lower than during July and August. Summer can be very hot and busy, especially in Rome and other popular places.
Getting around
Italy has a useful rail network connecting its main cities. Regional trains and buses serve many smaller towns. Check local timetables before travelling, especially at weekends and on public holidays.
Driving in Italy
Traffic drives on the right. Many historic centres have restricted traffic zones, known as ZTL areas. Entering one without permission can lead to a fine. Motorway tolls and limited parking should also be considered when planning a road trip.
Money and language
Italy uses the euro. Cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and larger shops, but it is useful to carry some cash for smaller businesses. Italian is the main language, though English is commonly spoken in popular visitor areas.
