We were looking for a place where we could slow down, relax and spend a few days in the countryside, and Poston Mill Self Catering Holidays felt like the right choice.

Poston Mill Park is part of Morris Leisure, a family-run business with over 30 years of experience operating a collection of well-kept holiday parks across Shropshire, Herefordshire and North Wales. They are known for their peaceful countryside locations, high standards and a focus on simple, relaxed stays. Poston Mill fits well within this, offering the same quiet, nature-led experience the group is known for.
The setting at Poston Mill Self Catering Holidays worked exactly as we had hoped. Open countryside, quiet surroundings and no sense of rush. It was the kind of place where you can switch off without even trying.
Check-in was simple and well organised. We were given the keys on arrival, and a member of staff led the way in a golf buggy while we followed in our car. She showed us to our caravan, walked us through the essentials, and made sure we were settled before heading off.
Poston Mill felt calm from the moment we arrived, and it quickly became clear this was exactly the kind of place where you can slow down without even trying.
Where Is Poston Mill Located?
Poston Mill Self Catering Holidays is located in the Golden Valley in Herefordshire, close to the England-Wales border.
It sits around 11 miles from Hay-on-Wye, which makes it a great base if you want to explore the area without staying in a busy town. You get the quiet countryside setting, but you are still within easy reach of places to visit.
The park is also within driving distance of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It took us around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach the main walking areas, which made it very manageable for day trips.
The park itself is set along the River Dore, with open views of the surrounding hills. It feels remote, but it is very easy to get to by car.
The park also has a few simple facilities on site, including a small shop, open spaces and walking routes.
First Impressions of Poston Mill
The first thing we noticed was how neat and well looked after everything was. The park felt open, with wide internal roads, trimmed hedges and plenty of space between the caravans.
The holiday homes were spread out nicely, each with its own patch of grass and outdoor space. It did not feel crowded at all. The layout gave it a calm and organised feel from the start.
There was a clear difference between the touring area and the static caravan section. The touring side felt a bit more lively, but the holiday home area where we stayed was quiet and relaxed. That is exactly what we were looking for.
Parking was easy, right next to the caravan, and getting around the park was simple. There were also small touches like landscaped areas, trees and open green spaces which made the whole place feel more like a countryside retreat than a typical holiday park.
Overall, it felt peaceful, well maintained and easy to settle into straight away.
Just behind the reception, there is an on-site pub and restaurant called The Mill. It is very convenient, especially after a long day out when you don’t feel like driving anywhere for dinner.
We went there on our first evening, and it turned out to be a great choice. The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff were friendly and it had that proper local pub feel. The menu covers a mix of traditional pub food, including freshly made dishes, sandwiches and vegetarian options, with a focus on locally sourced ingredients.
The food itself was excellent, both in terms of taste and portion size. There was also a good range of drinks, including local ales, ciders and plenty of non-alcoholic options. Prices felt reasonable for what you get, which made it even better.
It is definitely worth visiting if you are staying at Poston Mill, and even if you are just passing through the area.
Our Stay at Poston Mill Park
Our holiday home was comfortable, well laid out and a great place to unwind after a day out exploring.
The living area felt bright and spacious, with large windows letting in plenty of natural light. The L-shaped sofa made it easy to relax in the evenings, whether that was watching TV or just unwinding after a day out.
The space flowed nicely into the dining and kitchen area, which made it feel open rather than cramped. It had more of a small holiday home feel than a typical caravan.
After long days exploring, it was a comfortable place to come back to and switch off.
The kitchen was well laid out. It had everything needed for a self-catering stay, including a gas hob, oven, microwave and plenty of worktop space.
All the basics were covered, from cookware to utensils, which made it easy to prepare meals without any hassle. We ended up using it for both breakfast and dinner.
The dining table sat just next to the living area and was set up neatly when we arrived. It worked well for meals and also doubled up as a space to plan the next day.
A nice touch was the welcome hamper waiting in the kitchen, which made the stay feel more personal from the start.
There were two bedrooms in the caravan. The main bedroom had a comfortable double bed with enough space around it, while the second bedroom had twin beds, which would work well for families or small groups.
Both rooms were simple but clean and practical, with windows bringing in natural light and views of the surrounding greenery.
The bathroom was modern and well maintained, with a proper shower, sink and toilet. It was compact but everything worked well and felt clean.
The outdoor space was one of the highlights. Each caravan had its own paved area with outdoor seating, along with a small stretch of grass.
The spacing between the caravans meant it felt private, with open views rather than being overlooked. It added to the overall sense of calm around the park.
On a clear day, it was a nice spot to sit outside with a drink or just take in the surroundings. It also made a good transition space between being out exploring and settling back in for the evening.
What It’s Like Staying at Poston Mill
This is where Poston Mill Park really stands out.
The pace here is naturally slow. Mornings start quietly, with very little noise around you, and the same calm continues into the evening. Apart from birds and the occasional sound of the river, there is not much to disturb the peace.
After busy days out exploring, this made a big difference. Coming back to the park felt like a proper reset. There was no rush to do anything. You could just step inside, settle in, and unwind at your own pace.
We found ourselves making the most of the simple things. Sitting outside for a while, enjoying the open space, or going for a short walk around the park. The riverside paths along the River Dore are easy to follow and perfect if you want to stretch your legs without heading out again.
One of the nicest parts of the stay was that contrast. You could spend the day exploring places like Hay-on-Wye or the Brecon Beacons National Park, and then return to somewhere that felt calm and quiet.
It’s the kind of place where you don’t feel the need to rush or fill your time. You can just slow down and enjoy the setting, which is exactly what we were looking for.
Things to Do Near Poston Mill Park and Hay-on-Wye
Even though Poston Mill Self Catering Holidays is set in a quiet part of the countryside, there is plenty to see and do within easy driving distance.
One of the closest places worth visiting is Hay-on-Wye. Often called the “town of books”, it is known for its independent bookshops, small cafes and relaxed atmosphere. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend a few hours wandering through the streets, browsing the shops and stopping for coffee along the way.
For those who enjoy walking and nature, the Brecon Beacons National Park is also within reach. It took us around one to one and a half hours to reach the main walking areas, which made it very manageable for day trips.
During our stay, we explored a few different spots within the national park.
One of the highlights was the Sgwd Yr Eira waterfall walk, starting from Dinas Rock. The trail follows woodland paths and the river, passing several waterfalls along the way. One of the most memorable parts is that you can actually walk behind Sgwd Yr Eira itself. The path continues on the other side as well, so you can keep following the trail if you want to extend the walk.
We also visited Henrhyd Waterfall, the tallest waterfall in South Wales. The walk down to the falls is shorter but still very scenic. Here too you can walk behind the waterfall, although the path does not continue beyond it, so most visitors simply turn back after enjoying the view.
Another stop was the Clydach Gorge area. This part of the Brecon Beacons felt quieter and less crowded, with dramatic scenery and good walking routes through the valley.
Back at Poston Mill Park itself, there are also simple ways to enjoy the surroundings. The riverside walks along the River Dore are perfect for a relaxed stroll, and the open countryside around the park makes it easy to slow down and enjoy the peaceful setting.
