Our Lady of Loreto Statue in Primošten, Croatia: Complete Visitor Guide

During our holiday to Croatia, we spent two days in Trogir. We explored the historic old town and visited a few nearby places as day trips. One of these was the Our Lady of Loreto statue, high above the town of Primošten. It was not something we had planned in detail, but it turned out to be a memorable stop.

The Our Lady of Loreto statue stands on Gaj Hill, overlooking Primošten and the Adriatic Sea. Its hilltop location makes it visible from far away. The statue is modern but deeply meaningful to the local people. It represents faith, protection, and a long-standing devotion in this part of Croatia.

It is worth visiting for the views alone, but the calm setting and sense of space make it even more special.

Where is Our Lady of Loreto located?

The Our Lady of Loreto statue is located above Primošten, on a hill called Gaj. From Trogir, it is around 35 km away. The drive takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic. This makes it an easy half-day trip if you are staying in Trogir or nearby.

The hilltop setting is what makes this place stand out. Being so high up, the statue can be seen from far away, even from the coast. From the top, you get wide open views of Primošten, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding islands. The height adds to the calm feel of the place and gives it a strong sense of space and openness. When we visited (in October), there was just one other couple at the location. It was so calm and peaceful with far reaching views all around.

History of Our Lady of Loreto statue

The statue was built as a sign of faith and gratitude. The people of Primošten have a long devotion to Our Lady of Loreto. She is seen as a protector of the town, the land, and those who travel by sea. The idea of placing a statue on the hill had been discussed for many years before it finally became a reality.

Our Lady of Loreto is a title given to the Virgin Mary. It comes from the town of Loreto in Italy, which is an important place of pilgrimage. In this part of Croatia, devotion to Our Lady of Loreto goes back centuries. Locals pray to her for protection, peace, and guidance.

The statue was completed and opened to the public in 2017. Since then, it has become an important landmark for Primošten. It is also a place people visit for quiet reflection, not just sightseeing.

The statue is around 17 metres tall, including its base. As you get closer, it feels even bigger. It rises high above the hill and stands clear against the open sky. We could spot it from far away along the coast. When you stand below it, there is a strong sense of presence. It feels still, solid and watchful.

The statue is made from concrete and covered in a bright mosaic. Gold, silver, and coloured glass pieces reflect the light as the sun moves. In the morning it feels soft and gentle. By late afternoon, it shines and glows. Up close, you can see the detail in the surface and the care taken in the work.

Inside the statue is a small chapel. It is quiet and simple. The light is low, and outside sounds fade away. People step in slowly, light a candle, or pause for a few moments. Even if you are not religious, it feels calm and respectful.

How to Get To Our Lady of Loreto Statue

The easiest way to reach the statue is by car. From Primošten, a narrow road leads up to Gaj Hill. The drive is short but steep in places. There is a car park near the top, just a short walk from the statue. It was practically empty when we visited in October. Clear signs along the road point towards Gospa od Loreta, so it is hard to miss.

Best Time to Visit Our Lady of Loreto Statue

Morning is quiet and peaceful, with softer light and fewer people. Evening is popular, especially around sunset. This is when the views really shine, with warm colours over the sea and town below. It is a great time for photos.

The best months to visit are late spring and early autumn. The weather is pleasant and not too hot. In summer, go early or late in the day, as the hill can be very exposed to the sun and wind.

Views From the Top

From the top, the view opens out in every direction. Below you, Primošten’s old town sits on its small peninsula, with tight stone streets and rows of red terracotta roofs. Fishing boats and small yachts rest in the harbour, and the deep blue Adriatic Sea stretches far beyond them. Several small islands sit low on the horizon, clear and sharp on bright days.

On the land side, you can see patches of vineyards set between rough stone walls and dry, rocky ground. The contrast between the blue sea, pale stone, and green vines is striking. This mix of shapes, colours, and height makes the spot ideal for photography, especially with the statue standing tall in the frame.

What to Expect at the Site

The area around the statue is flat and open, with space to walk around without obstacles. There are no barriers blocking the view, so you can move freely and choose your own angles for photos or quiet moments. The ground is solid and well-kept, making it easy to stand and take your time.

Inside the statue, the chapel is small and softly lit. The air feels cooler, and the sound of the wind fades as you step inside. A few candles and simple religious symbols line the walls.

Just outside, there is a small café with outdoor seating, selling snacks, drinks and ice-creams.
