Festive Afternoon Tea at Sunborn Yacht Hotel in London

A trip to London would be incomplete without experiencing the quintessentially British tradition of enjoying an afternoon tea. The custom of Afternoon Tea, as we know it today, began sometime in the 1840s and is credited to Anna Maria Russell, the 7th Duchess of Bedford.

London is home to some of the best places to indulge in an afternoon tea and if you are visiting London during Christmas, you can enjoy a festive-themed afternoon tea featuring standout seasonal offerings.

Sunborn London, located in Royal Victoria Dock is the capital's only floating, luxury yacht hotel and are currently offering a festive afternoon tea featuring light bites, a range of cakes and sweet nibbles.

The afternoon tea is served in the Land's End restaurant which offers lovely views of London's financial district. If you plan to book a table at Land's End after reading this post, I would recommend asking for a table near the door that leads to the outer deck - the view is beautiful, both during the day and in the evening.

The Festive Afternoon Tea Menu at Sunborn

As Bhavin and I took our seats in the restaurant, we were warmly welcomed and handed the menu.

There were not many teas to choose from - English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Sencha, Apple and Elderflower. We opted for Sencha and Apple & Elderflower. Noting our choices, the serving staff mentioned that the Apple & Elderflower tea goes well with a drizzle of honey and it was a good recommendation, I must mention. The Sencha was also lovely. The lack of choice was quickly forgotten as both the brews were of good quality.

  • Cucumber, yoghurt, dill and chives on white bread
  • Egg mayonnaise with chopped shallots and watercress on a brioche roll
  • Wye Valley smoked salmon & cream cheese on white bread

Since we are vegetarians, the last two offerings were replaced with specially made vegetarian options for us - a spiced Tofu sandwich and a veggie & Hummus sandwich both of which were delicious. A special mention here for the brioche roll sandwich which was fabulous - perfectly seasoned and very tasty.

The scones were freshly baked and nice - spiced cranberry ones with Cornish clotted cream and seasonal preserve (strawberry & blackcurrant).

The sweet bites included a Battenburg cake, a melt-in-the-mouth, warm festive mince pie, a winter berry trifle that had great taste & consistency and a delicious macaroon with 70% dark chocolate & Maldon sea salt. What a treat! The macaroon was Bhavin's favourite while I loved the mince pie.
