Fort William in Scottish Highlands

On our visit to Scotland, our base was at Fort William. We stayed at the Croit Anna Hotel in Fort William and travelled to the other places from here.

Fort William is a growing tourist centre and an outdoor hub because of its proximity to Ben Nevis (the highest mountain in the British Isles). Glen Coe is to the south of Fort William while Aonach Mor is to the north. It is the second largest town in Scotland.

The town lies near the head of Loch Linnhe which is the longest sea loch in Scotland. Our hotel - the Croit Anna - was on the shores of Loch Linnhe. The walk along the loch is awesome. Cruise trips are conducted on the Loch Linnhe where you can take in the beauty of the loch and the mountains. We went on the cruise conducted by Crannog Cruises.

Fort William has also been a favorite with film makers as lot of movies have been filmed in the town or the surrounding areas. Some movies that were shot here are Braveheart, Highlander, some parts of Harry Potter, Being Human and Rob Roy.

The town centre is small and you can easily travel through the town on foot. The town centre houses the West Highland Museum which depicts the history of the highlands. Entry is gree and the museum is open 10 am to 4 pm Monday to Saturday.

What to do:

- Fort William is a lovely place to relax. You can spend weeks just taking in the scenery. walks along the loch Linnhe are so lovely.
- You could climb the Ben Nevis
- In the winter months snowboarding and skiing are interesting options. Gondolas will take you some way up.
- Biking: there are numerous bike trails if that's your cup of tea
- For walkers there are numerous walking trails. You could also do the Great Glen Way walk from Fort William to Inverness
- Day excursions to other places in the Highlands (Inverness, Isle of Skye)
- Travel on the Jacobite Steam Train to Mallaig from Fort William
- Go to the Loch Ness (if you are lucky you might spot Nessie :) )

There are lots of options for accomodation in Fort William. Numerous B&Bs, youth hostels, camping sites, hotels and farm accommodations. You can choose your pick.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Fort William and were so reluctant to head back home at the end of our holiday. Will definitely go back again.
