Boating at Hollow Ponds in in Leytonstone, London

Hollow Ponds is one of those places in London that feels much further away from the city than it really is.

When we first planned our visit, there was very little information about boating at Hollow Ponds online. We were not quite sure what to expect, but decided to visit anyway. I am glad we did, as it turned out to be a lovely day out.

Getting to Hollow Ponds

We travelled to Snaresbrook Underground station on the Central line. From the station, Hollow Ponds is around half a mile away and can be reached on foot.

As we got closer to the pond, the busy streets gave way to trees, open grass and water. The area feels much less formal than many of the parks and gardens in central London. It has a more natural and peaceful setting.

Rowing on Hollow Ponds

The pond is quite large, with trees and greenery surrounding the water. Rowing boats can be hired from the boathouse beside the pond.

We hired a boat for an hour and spent the time rowing around at our own pace. It was a simple activity, but a very enjoyable one. Being out on the water made it easy to forget that we were still in London.

At the time of our visit, an hour of boat hire cost £10. Prices have increased since then, so it is best to check the latest cost before visiting.

Other things to do at Hollow Ponds

You do not have to hire a boat to enjoy the area. There are paths around Leyton Flats which are suitable for walking and cycling. We also saw plenty of people walking their dogs.

The grassy areas around the water are good for a picnic, particularly on a warm and sunny day. There is also a small kiosk near the boathouse where you can buy drinks and snacks.

Is Hollow Ponds worth visiting?

Hollow Ponds is a good choice for anyone looking for a simple outdoor activity in East London. It is easy to reach by public transport, but feels far removed from the usual London sights.

We enjoyed spending an hour on the water and taking in the peaceful surroundings. It is a lovely place for a picnic, a gentle walk or a day out with family and friends.
