The Salisbury Cathedral in Wiltshire, England

At around 2 hours drive from London is the Salisbury Cathedral - an Anglican cathedral in Wiltshire. Also known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Salisbury Cathedral has the tallest church spire in the UK standing tall at 404 feet.



The cathedral has lots of other records attached to it along with some famous literary connections. The cathedral houses the Europe's oldest working clock dating back to 1386 AD. Isn't that just amazing? The cathedral also has the largest cloister in Britain and four original copies of the Magna Carta. But apart from all this, it's main purpose is being a centre of pilgrimage and prayer. Built in 1200s in early English Gothic style, the cathedral is open to all and is visited by more than 5,00,000 people every year. Some come to pray/worship while some come there for the impressive architecture and art installations or to study the original Magna Carta.

There are daily guided tours which will take you up the heart of the cathedral ending at the top of the tower from where you get magnificent views. A remarkable photo opportunity if you have the time and a good pair of legs because you need to climb 332 steps to reach the top. These tours last around 90 minutes and a maximum of 12 people are included per tour. Due to the limited number of tours, it is advisable to book in advance if you are interested.



Getting to Salisbury is very easy. You can drive from London in less than 2 hours. Or you can opt for the train services from London, Plymouth, Exeter, Bristol, Southampton or Bath. The cathedral is around 10 minutes walk from the railway station.
