The Resident Soho, London | Review

A couple of weeks back we were in London for a short break and had the pleasure of staying at The Resident Soho. The hotel had re-opened after a short closure with several new hygiene and safety measures in place to combat COVID.

The Resident Soho | Location

One of the key USPs of the Resident Soho is its location. It is located right in the heart of Soho, close to the capital's shopping, partying and food scene. And despite its central location, it is like an oasis unto itself. It is tucked away at the end of Carlisle Street and you can recognise the building by the beautiful, life-size bronze figure above its entrance.

The bronze figure is of Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon and of magic, and is the creation of Hew Locke, a popular sculptor and contemporary visual artist.

The hotel's lobby is beautifully done up; the focal point being two comfy, bottle-green velvet sofas complemented by a row of flower vases.

As we walked in, we were greeted by the staff and our temperatures were checked with a handheld contactless device.

Social distancing floor markings and protective screens at check-in desks had been installed. Sanitiser stations had also been placed at various locations in the hotel. We were briefed on the safety measures in place at the hotel and handed the keys to our room.

With all the staff wearing masks and face masks being mandatory for guests (especially in all shared public spaces) and with all the other safety measures in place, the hotel felt quite COVID safe.

The Resident Soho | Our Room

We stayed in one of the Superior rooms at the hotel. Spacious and well-designed, the room had a pocket-sprung king-sized bed, a desk & an armchair and a wall-mounted TV. Additional chair-bed or rollaway bed could also be added on request.

Hidden in a wall cabinet was a mini kitchen with a microwave, mini-fridge, sink with a filtered water tap, tea & coffee making facilities as well all utensils and cutlery needed for a quick meal. Given that the hotel doesn't have a restaurant of its own, this is a great feature especially for those guests who prefer to have a quick breakfast before heading out in the morning.

Note: The hotel will also stock the fridge with sanitised groceries, should you require anything, if you let them know prior to your arrival.

Also want to mention here that there were two packages containing disposable face masks, gloves and disinfectant wipes placed in the room. This is a part of the new hygiene and safety measures now in place at the hotel.

The spacious ensuite bathroom had a bathtub, a heated towel rail, fluffy towels, a selection of toiletries from Phytomer and a speacker in the ceiling!

There was not much of a view from the windows as they faced the back of the next building but overall the room was spacious, clean and well-kitted out for a comfortable stay.

The Resident Soho | The Local Area

The Resident Soho is just a five-minute walk from the Tottenham Court Road station (Central and Northern lines) and under 10 minutes from the Oxford Circus station (Bakerloo, Central and Victoria lines) should you wish to explore London. If you are looking for thigs to see and do around the hotel, you are spoilt for choice. Some of our recommendations include:

  • Spend some time at Soho Square Gardens, a lovely little garden just off Oxford Street and with a mock Tudor hut that its almost 100 years old. A great place to get away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy some quiet time.

Soho Square Gardens

  • Enjoy a game of social darts at Flight Club Bloomsbury. Good choice of drinks and food to boot.
  • Visit the Photographers’ Gallery and enjoy exhibitions, talks, events and workshops dedicated to photography.
  • Visit the Bloomsbury Tavern for some comforting pub food or light bites and a quick drink. With wooden floors and panelling and lovely stained glass windows, the pub has an old-world feel and is located just a short walk away from the British Museum.

The Bloomsbury Tavern

  • Enjoy delicious vegetarian food at Govinda's Pure Vegetarian Restaurant which is a part of the Radha Krishna Temple on Soho Street.
  • My final recommendation is a little further afield but worth a visit if you love vegan food. by CHLOE is a casual vegan restaurant in Covent Garden that serves a fun, plant-based take on traditional classics.

To sum it up, we loved our stay at The Resident Soho. The room was fantastic, the amenities good and the staff were friendly and professional.
