Fjällräven is a Swedish outdoor clothing and equipment company who are committed to making nature more accessible. Keeping in line with the Swedish style sensibilities, the brand focuses on simplicity and practicality, developing functional, durable and timeless outdoor gear for more than 50 years now. As a brand, their core mission has always been to inspire more people to spend time in nature. One of Fjällräven's most iconic pieces is their Kånken backpack. First developed in 1978, it was aimed at Swedish school children but it was not long before adults wanted the cool & functional bag too! Today the Kånken is available in the original design, a mini version, an extra durable version as well as a model made from recycled plastic (the Re-Kånken). The Kånken is an absolute classic when it comes to backpacks. I recently got my hands on a Kånken Mini and have been putting it through its paces over the last many weeks.

The Kanken Mini Backpack

Made with a hard wearing material called Vinylon F fabric, the Kånken Mini can be carried as a backpack or a bag using the convertible straps. The classic Fjällräven logo (the little red fox curled up inside a white circle) features prominently on the front of the backpack. The mini backpack has a volume of 7 litres and is very lightweight at just 220gms. It is suitable both for children as well as for adults who prefer a small backpack. I found it perfect for my petite frame. Despite its small size, it packs in a lot of space. It is perfect for my countryside adventures easily holding my wallet, sunglasses, phone, some snacks, a small water bottle, iPad, an umbrella and other bits and bobs. The mini backpack is a perfect alternative to a handbag especially when you are out exploring the outdoors.

Fjällräven Kånken Mini Backpack Review

The mini backpack is a very good combination of functionality and style and has the same unique, squared off edges as the original Kånken. It is made with a hard-wearing and yet lightweight material called Vinylon F fabric that has the ability to withstand dirt and wetness. The main compartment of the backpack has a large zipped opening making it easy to put in and take out stuff. There are two flat side pockets and a zipped pocket on the front. The flat side pockets could have been a little bigger or maybe a little more stretchy, I feel. I can fit in my umbrella, maps and other small bits & pieces but not a water bottle. It is not an issue though as the main compartment has enough space to carry a water bottle. A PE foam seat cushion has been provided in the interior back pocket so that the contents in the main compartment do not poke against your back. A good idea! The backpack comes with handles at the top and adjustable shoulder straps for standard use. The straps can be adjusted and fit both small and big backs.

Overall, it is a great-looking and well-made backpack. The quality is good and I am sure it is going to last a very long time. The Mini Kånken would be ideal for short, outdoor adventures or as an alternative to a handbag on your urban jaunts. The backpack comes in a range of colours; there are 40+ colour options to choose from!
