Cave Tours at Nottingham Castle

How exciting it is to find a hidden world beneath the streets that you walk on! Nottingham's network of man-made caves are just that - intriguing, ancient, lost for a long time and being discovered even today. Nearly 100 caves were discovered in the past few years and experts are still in the process of uncovering the maze of sandstone tunnels. These caves are a very important part of the city's history and many of them (in various locations) are open to the public to explore. One such place is the Nottingham Castle (Ducal Palace) which has a labyrinth of caves beneath the castle structure.

The castle conducts daily guided tours that will allow you to discover secret passageways, King David’s legendary dungeon, the Duke of Newcastle’s Wine Cellar or Mortimer’s Hole. The tour lasts around half an hour and involves a lot of steep steps. However, the tour is very fascinating and a lot of credit goes to the guide who was really passionate about his work. He had so much information to share with us and everyone in our group enjoyed the tour. The tour begins in the castle's courtyard and ends near the bottom of the hill (near Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem). The tours run four times a day and cost £5.00 per person.

The grounds of the castle (not technically a castle anymore) are lovely and you also get some really lovely views over the cityscape. The castle building houses a museum and while it had some interesting exhibits, I felt it was a little disjointed and could be improved.

Admission charges to the castle (and grounds) is £6.00 for adults and £5.00 for under 16's and over 65's. There is only limited car parking on site and this is reserved for visitors with disabilities. You need to book this in advance. There are many public car parks nearby. We used the Maid Marian Way Car Park which is a short walk from the castle and it was around £4.20 for 24-hour parking.
