Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem - The Oldest Inn in England

There are plenty of old pubs scattered all over UK, but if you are interested in an assuredly old and historic place to eat and grab a drink, then head to Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem in Nottingham. The pub claims to be the oldest inn in England (established in 1189 AD) and having visited it a few days back, it is easy to believe in the claim. Built into the very rocks that Nottingham Castle is built on, the pub is well-preserved and houses some historic artefacts from the days gone by.

The pub is known for its caves as much as it is known for its ales and amazing atmosphere. When you step inside the pub, you are almost immediately transported back in time. The caves carved out of soft sandstone rock are used as drinking rooms and each room houses a selection of curio objects like the 'fertility chair' in one of the lounges that is said to help women conceive or the 'cursed galleon', a model of a ship that is said to have brought ill luck or death to all those who have cleaned it.

The pub's menu includes quintessentially British pub-style food, sharing boards and delicious desserts. The range of local ales available in the pub is impressive. The food we sampled was as expected - traditional in taste, very filling and at regular pub prices. A special mention for the Triple Chocolate Brownie served with Mint chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce - it was sinfully delicious.

If you are in Nottingham, you should visit this quirky and incredibly interesting pub - reasonably priced delicious food, good selection of drinks, great service and a totally unique atmosphere. The only downside is that it can be extremely busy and you might have to queue up for your pint. If you are in a hurry, then it is down to luck whether you can find a table in time.

The pub also conducts cellar tours which gives you the chance to go into the Nottingham Castle rock and explore the network of caves beneath the building. If you are interested in history or simply want to learn more about the art of brewing, then the cellar tours are for you.

  1. Looks interesting and quite something. Must be really an unique atmosphere and experience. Love the pubs who have their own characters. But at the end depends on each individual. The food sounds great. It is always a plus when there is a good chef and excellent food. Love the cellar.

  10. There seem to be a number of Inns who claim to be the oldest inn in England, I'm sure there's one on the outskirts of Leeds making the same claim?

  15. Thank goodness this hasn't been "improved". It is full of character and I must make sure my friend's daughter knows about it as she is at University in Nottingham. Your photographs really do give us the flavour of it.

  34. I do love the older pubs, especially ones that haven't been gutted or the character taken out of them. We used to visit the old one on the way to Whitby and there was nothing like coming in from the cold to a roaring fire and warm hospitality.
