Autumn Colours at The Garden House in Yelverton, Devon

Ten acres of colourful blooms and beauty - that is what The Garden House in Yelverton is all about. Owned and run by the Fortescue Garden Trust (an independent charity), the Garden House is several different gardens rolled into one. So you have the Summer garden with Geraniums and Echinacea blooms and you also have the walled garden filled with a vibrant burst of colours. You will also find a quarry garden, a wildflower meadow, an acer glade, a bulb meadow and a cottage garden. Simply put, The Garden House has it all and is one of the best examples of naturalistic planting with more than 6,000 plant varieties in the garden all growing in complete harmony with the natural surroundings.

The Garden House is the former home of the vicars of Buckland Monachorum. The present building which now accommodates the tearooms and the conference centre dates back to the early 19th century. The house was purchased by Lionel Fortescue and his wife Katharine in the 1940s and they gave it its current name. Fortescue was an avid plant collector and brought back plant specimens from his travels. The combination of its magnificent location (on the edge of Dartmoor), the impressive collection of plant specimens and continued hard work has meant that The Garden House has become a glorious garden for all seasons.

It does not matter when you visit the garden as it will have wonderful blooms in all seasons. We visited the Garden House a few days back and with the weather becoming colder, the beautiful colours of Autumn were on display in the garden. The warm Autumn hues were simply stunning. The leaves were turning from green to a vibrant palette of yellows, oranges and reds. It was a lovely feast for our eyes. We spent a good couple of hours walking down the winding paths through the immaculately maintained gardens. Like I mentioned earlier, the location is stunning and it offers some really amazing views. The gardens are well sign-posted and with the map that you are handed at the reception, you can easily navigate through all sections of the garden.
