Guernsey Museum and Candie Gardens

Way back in 1790s, Peter Mourant became the owner of Candie Estate in Guernsey. The ownership was passed onto Osmond de Beauvoir Priaulx in 1859 who donated the house and the grounds to the Island to be used as a public library and park. The library was opened to public in 1887 and a little later the Candie Gardens.

The gardens comprise of an upper lawned pleasure garden and a lower vegetable and fruits garden. There are 2 greenhouses in the lower garden which date to the 1790s and are amongst the oldest in Britain. The layout of the garden is almost unchanged and remain similar to the one in 1897. The garden offers lovely views across the St Peter Port harbour and remains open until dusk daily.

Admission is FREE and the gardens are situated at a 5 minutes' walk from the centre of St. Peter Port.

The Guernsey Museum is located in Candie Gardens and is 10 minutes' uphill walk from the St Peter Port centre. You can follow the Story of Guernsey from the time it first became an island up to the 21st century. The main permanent gallery houses an impressive collection of items from the Neolithic times. There are also some excellent geological specimens on display. One of the most striking items is the figure if an iron age warrior that has been dressed and fitted out with items found on a burial ground at Guernsey's Kings Road site.

There is a new gallery called the Rona Cole Art Gallery which has some 200 pieces of artwork including the Rodin bust of Victor Hugo.

Temporary Exhibitions are hosted each year in the Brian White Gallery and a number of special Events are held at the Museum as well. When we went there, 'The 60s are back' exhibition was on.
